ECA Validity for Express Entry: What Happens If Your ECA Expires (Real Cases)
An ECA feels like a one-time job. It is not. It carries a date, and Express Entry checks that date twice. Here is how the 5 year rule works, when an old report sinks an application, and how applicants renewed theirs.

ECA validity for Express Entry is 5 years from the date the report was issued. Your Educational Credential Assessment must be less than 5 years old at two moments: when you complete your Express Entry profile, and when you submit your application for permanent residence. IRCC is blunt about the result of getting this wrong. If you apply with an expired ECA, the application is refused.
Most people get their ECA early, often years before they enter the pool. Then life happens. A language retake, a job change, a long wait for the right draw. The report quietly ages in a drawer.
We checked IRCC’s current instructions and read forum threads from 2018 to 2023 where applicants found their report was about to expire, or already had. This is what the rules say, and what those applicants did.
Quick answer: how long an ECA is valid
IRCC accepts an ECA for 5 years from the date it was issued. It must be valid when you complete your profile and again when you submit your application after an invitation. If it expires while you are in the pool, get a new or reissued report before you apply. If it expires after you have submitted, applicants report that it does not need renewing, because it was valid on the day you applied.
Key takeaways
How ECA Validity Works
An Educational Credential Assessment shows that your foreign degree, diploma or certificate is equal to a completed Canadian one. IRCC’s help centre states that it will accept ECA reports for five years from the date they are issued, provided the report is still valid and is an ECA for immigration purposes.
The clock starts on the issue date printed on the report. It does not start when you enter the pool, and it does not pause while you wait for a draw.

The Two Moments Your ECA Must Be Valid
IRCC’s page says your ECA must be less than 5 years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application. It then gives two warnings. Make sure your ECA will still be valid when you plan to apply. And make sure it is valid for the rest of the time you will be in the pool.

The second moment is the dangerous one. A profile stays in the pool for up to 12 months, and an invitation can come at any point in that year. Then you have 60 days to submit. An ECA that was fine on day one can be expired by the day you click submit.
ECA issued | Profile created | Invited | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
March 2023 | October 2026 | December 2026 | Fine. Valid until March 2028 |
January 2022 | October 2026 | December 2026 | Tight. Expires January 2027, so submit before then |
November 2021 | October 2026 | December 2026 | Expired in November 2026. Renew before applying |
September 2021 | October 2026 | – | Already expired. Cannot be used for the profile |
Our examples, applying the 5 year rule to the dates shown.
If you are in the third row, do not submit and hope. IRCC’s wording leaves no room: if you apply with an expired ECA, the application is refused. Get the new report first. If time is too short, compare that risk with declining the invitation and waiting for another.
Who Needs an ECA at All
Not everyone does. IRCC says that if you completed your education outside Canada, you need an ECA for two purposes: to be eligible as the principal applicant under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, or to earn points for education you got outside Canada.
Do you need one?
The report has to say the right thing. IRCC requires that it show your completed foreign credential is equal to a completed Canadian secondary or post-secondary credential. A report that describes study without a completed credential does not earn the points. For the awkward cases, see our guides on online degrees and the ECA and on claiming two or more credentials.
What If It Expires After You Apply?
This is the most common worry on the forums, and the experience there is reassuring.
Real case: expiring six months into processing
In October 2019, an applicant who had submitted in June 2019 realized their WES report would expire on December 22, 2019, with the file still in process. An experienced member replied that the report was valid on the day of application, and that its validity is locked in at that point. No renewal was needed.
That matches the rule as IRCC writes it. The two checks are at profile completion and at submission. There is no third check during processing. An officer can always ask for a document, but an ECA that was valid on submission day has met the requirement.
Real case: nominated, but not yet invited
In 2023, another applicant asked the same thread about an ECA that would expire after a provincial nomination but before the federal invitation. The answer was different. At the moment you are invited and asked to apply, the documents must be valid. That report needed renewing first.
The difference between the two cases is one date. What matters is whether the ECA was valid on the day the application went in.

How Applicants Renewed an Expiring ECA
IRCC does not run the assessments. Designated organizations do, and each sets its own renewal process. For most people who already have a report, renewal means asking the same organization to reissue it. Forum experience shows where it goes wrong.
Real case: the duplicate that carried the old date
In September 2019, an applicant with a July 2014 WES report had ordered a duplicate before it expired and asked whether that reset the 5 years. Members had seen mixed results, including reports refused as older than 5 years. One later confirmed success after requesting electronic delivery to IRCC as well as the paper copy. The reissued report carried a March 2020 date.
Costs reported in that thread, for 2019 to 2020, were roughly 30 Canadian dollars for the duplicate, 30 for electronic delivery to IRCC and about 85 for a courier. Treat those as one person’s old receipt, not a price list.
Real case: renewing before it runs out
In March 2018, an applicant planned to submit in May with a report expiring in mid June. The organization’s website only offered renewal after expiry. Members suggested contacting customer service directly to ask for an early reissue, and keeping transcripts ready in case documents had to be sent again.
A renewal checklist
IRCC’s instruction on the last step is simple: enter the results and the reference number into your Express Entry profile. A new report means a new reference number, so update the profile before an invitation arrives.
The Organizations That Can Issue an ECA
Only an organization designated by IRCC can issue an ECA for immigration. The page lists five general ones.
Organization | Designated since |

Three professions have their own body. Physicians need an ECA for their primary medical diploma from the Medical Council of Canada. Pharmacists who need a licence to practise go through the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada. Architects who need a licence go through the Canadian Architectural Certification Board, which was designated on May 20, 2024.

Plan the ECA With Your Other Expiry Dates
The ECA is one of several documents with a clock. A language test lasts two years. A medical lasts 12 months. A police certificate for the country you live in must be recent. Line the dates up before you enter the pool.

Our guides on the medical exam, police certificates and an expired IELTS after an ITA cover the other clocks. If your education points are part of a close score, also check how Canadian education points are counted.

Final Thoughts
ECA validity comes down to one date and two checks. Find the issue date, add 5 years, and make sure that day falls after the moment you expect to submit, not just the moment you enter the pool.
If the numbers are tight, renew before an invitation, not after. Ask for a reissue, confirm the new date, confirm electronic delivery, and update your profile. An hour of checking now is cheaper than a refused application.
