Certificate of Qualification Express Entry Guide: How to Get 50 CRS Points (Real Cases)
When a trade certificate gives 25 or 50 CRS points, why many people get less, how to get one in Ontario, BC or Alberta, and 27 real cases.

Certificate of qualification Express Entry points can add up to 50 to your CRS score. For a tradesperson without a degree, that can be the biggest jump in the whole profile. But it only works if your certificate is the right kind and you still have room under the skill transferability cap.
We read 27 threads on a large Canadian immigration forum, from 2015 to 2026. Nurses, accountants, pilots and IT workers claimed these points and got zero. One tradesperson added a Red Seal and gained only 8 points.
This certificate of qualification Express Entry guide covers the rules, the math, the provincial routes and the real outcomes.
Quick answer: how many CRS points does a certificate of qualification give?
Under the certificate of qualification Express Entry rules, a trade certificate issued by a Canadian province, territory or federal body gives 50 CRS points if you have CLB 7 or higher in all four language abilities, or 25 points if you have CLB 5 or higher in all four with at least one below CLB 7. These points sit in skill transferability, which is capped at 100 points in total.
Key takeaways
What Is a Certificate of Qualification in Express Entry?
On its Federal Skilled Trades page, IRCC describes a certificate of qualification as a certificate in your skilled trade “issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority.” It proves you passed a certification exam. It also shows you meet all the requirements to practise that trade in that province or territory.
In your profile, the certificate of qualification Express Entry question reads: “Do you have a certificate of qualification from a Canadian province, territory or federal body?” The help note says these are for skilled trades and need a provincial or territorial exam.
The Ministerial Instructions (section 26) ask for “a valid certificate of qualification in a trade occupation issued by a competent provincial or federal authority.” They give no list of trades, which causes most of the confusion.
Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
Points | 25 or 50 CRS points (skill transferability section) |
50 points | COQ + CLB 7 or higher in all four abilities |
25 points | COQ + CLB 5 or higher in all four, at least one below CLB 7 |
0 points | Any first-language ability below CLB 5 |
Who issues it | A Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority |
What field | A trade occupation, not a profession |
Whose COQ | Principal applicant only; spouse status does not change it |
Overall cap | 100 points for all skill transferability combinations together |

Certificate of Qualification Express Entry Points: 25 or 50?
The points depend on your first official language scores. IRCC’s CRS criteria list two levels. With CLB 7 or higher in all four abilities, you get 50. With CLB 5 or higher in all four, but at least one ability below CLB 7, you get 25.
Your lowest CLB (first language) | COQ points | Example |
|---|---|---|
CLB 4 or lower in any ability | 0 | CLB 4 in reading, 6 in the rest |
CLB 5 or 6 in at least one ability | 25 | CLB 6 in writing, 8 in the rest |
CLB 7 or higher in all four | 50 | CLB 7 in all four |
Check your test scores with our CLB calculator before you count the points.
One weak ability, like CLB 6 in writing, cuts the bonus in half. So one retest could be worth 25 points. Use our CLB calculator to convert your IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core or TEF scores first.
Watch the FST language minimum
Federal Skilled Trades only needs CLB 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing. But COQ points need CLB 5 in all four. So an FST applicant with CLB 4 in reading can qualify for the program and still get 0 COQ points in their CRS.
The 100-Point Cap Trap: Why Your Score May Not Move
Most guides skip this. Skill transferability has five combinations: education with language, education with Canadian work, foreign work with language, foreign work with Canadian work, and COQ with language. Together they can never pass 100 points.
So certificate of qualification Express Entry points are not always worth 50. You get 50 or the room left under 100, whichever is smaller. With a degree, strong English and years of foreign work, you may be at 100 already.

Your transferability score now | COQ points (CLB 7+) | Real CRS gain |
|---|---|---|
38 (like the January 2015 case below) | 50 | +50 (new total 88) |
50 | 50 | +50 (new total 100) |
75 | 50 | +25 (capped at 100) |
92 (likely the July 2025 case) | 50 | +8 (capped at 100) |
100 | 50 | +0 |
Our examples using the 100-point skill transferability cap from IRCC’s CRS criteria.
Real case: a Red Seal that added only 8 points
In July 2025, a Red Seal holder added the certificate to their profile and expected +50. Their score went up by only 8. The listed factor points added up to about 40 more than the CRS shown. The likely reason is the cap: they were probably at 92 out of 100 already, so only 8 more points could fit.
Real case: removing a certificate changed nothing
In July 2023, a cook working in Ontario retirement homes had claimed a food handler certificate as a COQ. Members said it did not count, so they deleted it. Their CRS stayed around 500, because skill transferability was already at 100 from education and work. The wrong claim had never added anything.
In January 2015, another member had 38 transferability points: 13 from education and language and 25 from foreign work and language. For them, a real COQ with CLB 7 would add the full 50. Run your numbers in our CRS calculator before you spend months and hundreds of dollars on a challenge exam.
Which Trades Can Claim Certificate of Qualification Express Entry Points?
IRCC has no separate trade list for the CRS bonus. It does publish the trade groups for the Federal Skilled Trades Program (NOC 2021):
Trade groups on the FST list (NOC 2021)
Some sources treat this as the COQ list too, others say the lists differ. IRCC has not confirmed either, so treat it as a guide. Look up your code with our NOC TEER finder.
Forum members give the same short answer: certificate of qualification Express Entry points are for skilled trades that usually need an apprenticeship, like plumbers, electricians, carpenters, mechanics, cooks and butchers.
Licences That Do NOT Count as a COQ
This is the biggest certificate of qualification Express Entry myth we found. Many professionals hold a Canadian licence and assume it counts. It does not. A COQ must be “in a trade occupation,” and nursing is not a trade group.

Real licences that got 0 COQ points
Real case: the points showed up, then did not count
In December 2022, a Registered Nurse licensed in Ontario, who had passed the NCLEX, added her licence as a COQ. The points appeared in the criteria breakdown, but her overall CRS did not change. A moderator told her to remove it right away because nursing is not a trade. In February 2025, another Ontario RN asked the same question and got the same answer.
Nurses do have another route. IRCC runs healthcare category draws, and our category-based draws guide explains how they work. Claiming a nursing licence for certificate of qualification Express Entry points only adds risk.
College diplomas, welding tickets and partial levels
In June 2020, an Ontario welder with a one-year college certificate asked about the 50 points. The answer: a college trade program is not a COQ, and CWB welding tickets do not count either.
Partial levels also fail. In 2023, an automotive service technician in BC passed the Level 1 exam. A reply said Level 1 does not count and “you need to complete the whole red seal.” In 2025 and 2026, cooks asked whether BC’s Professional Cook Level 1 counts. SkilledTradesBC and IRCC each sent them to the other, and no one got a clear yes.
From 2018 to 2021, an Ontario cook passed the Trade Equivalency Assessment but only held a Statement of Membership, not the full certificate. Members said it could not be used. That cook got PR through a PNP instead.
Operator Certificates: The Grey Zone
Some certificates sit in Major Group 92 but are not issued by the main trade body, like water, refrigeration and gas technician certificates. Certificate of qualification Express Entry outcomes here were mixed.
Certificate | Date | What happened |
|---|---|---|
Ontario water/wastewater operator | May 2018 | Member reported getting 50 points |
Ontario drinking-water operator (CEC) | Jan 2019 | Officer questioned it after the ITA; 5 days to respond |
OWWCO operator-in-training (OIT) | Sep 2023 | Told not to claim it |
TSSA Gas Technician Level 3, Ontario | Oct 2020 | Told “No – it won’t” |
Technical Safety BC refrigeration operator | Jan 2023 | Mixed advice; unresolved |
TSSA refrigeration operator Class B | Nov 2024 | Depends on the authority; no clear answer |
Gas Technician G3, Ontario | Mar 2026 | No replies |
Based on forum reports from 2018 to 2026. None of these are official IRCC decisions.
Real case: an officer asked for proof after the ITA
In January 2019, a CEC applicant with Ontario drinking-water and wastewater operator certificates received an ITA. Then an officer asked whether the certificates met the COQ definition: a passed certification exam and all requirements to practise. They had only 5 days to reply. Members advised showing the job is in Major Group 92, the Ministry is the competent authority, and the operator-in-training stage is like an apprenticeship. The final result was never posted.
In January 2023, a BC refrigeration operator at CRS 479 would reach 529 with the COQ points. Consultants disagreed, IRCC agents were unsure, and Technical Safety BC could not confirm. The last reply said it “might indeed count” and suggested an IRCC webform. In this grey zone, get a written answer first.
How to Get a Certificate of Qualification by Province
Certificate of qualification Express Entry points start with the province, not IRCC. Each province has its own rules, and IRCC says you usually have to go there to be assessed. Experienced workers use a “challenge” route: prove your hours, then write the exam.

Province | Route | Fee | Key rules |
|---|---|---|---|
Ontario | Trade Equivalency Assessment (Skilled Trades Ontario) | $235 + HST | Hours must match the full apprenticeship; then write the exam and pay a certificate fee. Only for trades with a certifying exam. |
British Columbia | Challenge a certification exam (SkilledTradesBC) | $120 | Employer or statutory declarations; references are phoned. About 10 to 12 weeks, longer with foreign experience. Pass within 24 months. |
Alberta | Trade Qualifier, Work Experience Program | $450, non-refundable | Finish the practical exam or other option within 18 months. Certified translations needed. |
Fees from each provincial trade authority as of September 2026. Exam and certificate fees are extra.

Ontario
Skilled Trades Ontario runs the Trade Equivalency Assessment for experienced workers, including people with experience outside Canada. You must show experience equal to the total training time of the apprenticeship. Then you write the exam and pay for the COQ. Compulsory trades have a $60 + HST yearly renewal.
British Columbia
SkilledTradesBC calls these applicants “trade qualifiers.” The hours you need are listed on each trade page. In January 2025, a carpenter from Massachusetts needed to prove 9,540 work hours and asked if tax returns were enough. They said calls and emails went unanswered. From August 1, 2026, trade qualifiers who fail the exam 4 times are no longer placed at the final level with full hours credit.
Alberta
Alberta’s trade qualifier program leads to a journeyperson certificate. The $450 fee is not refundable, you have 18 months to finish, and foreign-language documents need certified translation.
Steps to add a certificate of qualification to your Express Entry profile
Red Seal and Your COQ
The Red Seal is not a separate certificate. According to the Red Seal Program, it is an endorsement “affixed to a provincial or territorial certificate of qualification” after you pass the Interprovincial Red Seal exam. So a Red Seal comes with a COQ.
For certificate of qualification Express Entry points, the seal itself adds nothing extra. The value is the COQ underneath it. In May 2023, a member preparing a relative for the automotive Red Seal challenge was warned that most prep kits were outdated.
Federal Skilled Trades: COQ or Job Offer
A COQ plays two separate roles. First, it is one way to qualify for the Federal Skilled Trades Program. FST needs either a valid full-time job offer for at least one year, or a COQ. Second, it gives certificate of qualification Express Entry points to anyone in the pool, under FSW, CEC or FST.
FST also needs 2 years (3,120 hours) of work in the same trade within the last 5 years, but no education. If your province does not certify your trade, IRCC says you can still qualify with a job offer in your trade from a Canadian employer.
The 2026 Reform Proposal for COQ Points
On April 23, 2026, IRCC posted a consultation on reforms to Express Entry and the CRS. It says Express Entry “currently awards points to candidates who have a certificate of trades qualification along with official language skills.”
The consultation proposed “accepting only certificates for Red Seal designated trades, and introducing new points to recognize trade apprenticeship work.” It also floated recognizing Canadian licences in other regulated jobs.
This is a proposal, not a rule
As of September 2026, these are consultation ideas. The current certificate of qualification Express Entry rules still apply until IRCC announces a change. Check the IRCC consultation page and the CRS criteria before you plan around it. If you are choosing between routes, a Red Seal trade looks like the safer bet.
For nurses, the proposal matters. Today their licence gets 0 COQ points. That could change later, but for now, do not claim it.
Common Certificate of Qualification Express Entry Mistakes
IRCC checks your points again after the ITA. If a wrong claim drops you below your round’s cutoff, you can be refused, and it can raise a misrepresentation concern.

Before your next draw, check how far you are from the cutoff on our latest draws page. If you are 20 points short and already at 100 in transferability, a COQ will not close that gap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a certificate of qualification give 50 or 25 CRS points?
Under certificate of qualification Express Entry rules, you get 50 points with CLB 7 or higher in all four abilities. You get 25 if you have CLB 5 or higher in all four but at least one is below CLB 7.
Does a nursing licence count as a certificate of qualification?
No. A COQ must be in a trade occupation. RNs and RPNs who asked on the forum were told to remove the claim.
Do I have to work in my trade to claim COQ points?
The Ministerial Instructions do not say you must. One member in 2018 reported getting the points without working in that NOC, but that is not an official rule.
Does a Level 1 or Level 2 exam count?
Members were told no. You need the full certificate of qualification, such as a journeyperson certificate, not a partial level.
Is a college trade certificate or a CWB welding ticket a COQ?
No. Neither is issued by a provincial trade authority after a certification exam, so neither gives COQ points.
Why did my score go up by only 8 after adding my Red Seal?
Skill transferability is capped at 100 points. If you were already at 92, only 8 more points could fit under the cap.
Do I have to be in Canada to get a COQ?
IRCC says each province has its own rules and you usually have to go there to be assessed and write the exam.
Do I need an ECA for my trade certificate?
No. ECAs are for education. In 2022, WES refused to assess trade certificates and refunded the fees.
For Federal Skilled Trades, do I need a COQ and a job offer?
No, you need one or the other. If your province does not certify your trade, a qualifying job offer can work.
Will the 2026 reforms remove COQ points for non-Red Seal trades?
A 2026 IRCC consultation proposed accepting only Red Seal trade certificates. It is a proposal, so check canada.ca for any final change.

Final Thoughts
Certificate of qualification Express Entry points can be the best 50 points a tradesperson ever earns. But the real cases show three traps: the certificate must be a true trade COQ, your language must be CLB 7 in all four, and you must have room under the 100-point cap.
Check your numbers first, then pick your province and collect employer letters. In the grey zone, get a written answer before you claim a single point.
