IELTS expired after ITA guide showing the 2-year test validity, the eAPR submission checkpoint and the 60-day ITA window

You finally get your invitation. Then you look at your test report and see the date. If your IELTS expired after ITA, or will expire before you can upload everything, it can feel like the whole application is about to fall apart.

It usually isn’t. IRCC only checks your test at two moments, and one has already passed. We read 18 threads on a large Canadian immigration forum from 2015 to 2026 and checked every rule against IRCC’s own pages.

This guide covers IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF Canada and TCF Canada. The IELTS expired after ITA rules are the same for all five tests.

Quick answer: what happens if your IELTS expired after ITA?

Your language test must be less than 2 years old when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your eAPR. If your IELTS expired after ITA but before you submit, you must retake the test, or decline the invitation. IRCC says it will refuse an application sent with expired results. If it expires after you submit, you don’t need a new test.

Key takeaways

  • IRCC checks your test at two points only: profile creation and eAPR submission.
  • The ITA date itself is not a checkpoint. What matters is the day you click submit.
  • If your test expires after you submit, members reported approvals with no retake request.
  • A retake after the ITA works only if your new CRS stays at or above the round cutoff and you still meet your program minimum CLB.
  • Never hide a lower score. Upload both results and a short letter of explanation.
  • If you can’t get a valid test in time, declining the ITA does not hurt future invitations.

The Language Test Rule: Two Checkpoints, Not Three

IRCC’s language test page is clear. Your results “must be less than 2 years old when you: complete your Express Entry profile, and submit your application for permanent residence.” There is no third date.

The same page also warns: “If you apply for permanent residence with language test results that have expired, we’ll refuse your application.” So the day you submit is the day that counts. Not the ITA date, and not the day you get your COPR.

IELTS Expired After ITA but Before You Submit: What Happens

This is the most common problem. Your invitation gives you 60 days. If your IELTS expired after ITA and you haven’t submitted yet, you can’t use it. IRCC’s page gives you three choices: take the test again, apply before the results expire, or decline the invitation and go back into the pool.

Real case: ITA 10 days before expiry

In May 2025, one applicant got an ITA on May 1 while their IELTS expired on May 11. They were still waiting on police certificates. One reply said their score was “locked at ITA.” Another member then quoted IRCC’s page, which says the test must be valid at submission. The applicant decided to retake the test. A later reply added that the new scores still had to meet the cutoff of the draw they were invited in.

That “locked at ITA” idea shows up again and again. It’s wrong. If your test expires in a few weeks, either submit before expiry or book a new test right away. Waiting until your IELTS expired after ITA leaves you with fewer choices.

Submitting before the expiry date

Many people made it. In May 2019, a provincial nominee with an IELTS expiring on August 18 got an ITA on May 29. They submitted on July 15 and got their AOR the same day. In November 2016, another applicant with a CELPIP expiring in March 2017 was told they were fine as long as they submitted before that date.

Missing documents are the usual reason people run late. In April 2017, a member’s IELTS was due to expire on August 14, but his wife’s X-ray was pushed to September because she was pregnant. Replies told him to submit earlier with proof the medical was pending rather than wait.

When the ITA arrives after the test already expired

Real case: expired four days before the ITA

In February 2021, an applicant received an ITA on February 13 in a large CEC draw with a low cutoff. Their IELTS had expired on February 9, and the deadline was May 15. They booked CELPIP for April 1. Replies were split. Some said to decline. Others said to take CELPIP and submit if the new score kept them above the cutoff, since switching tests is allowed. One warned it could look like a “bait and switch.”

Here’s the catch. Your profile should never show an expired test. IRCC’s pool page lists “your language test results expired” as a reason a profile can become ineligible. If you’re invited with a test that has already expired, get advice before you submit anything.

What If Your Test Expires After You Submit Your eAPR?

Good news. Once you submit, the rule has done its job. IRCC doesn’t list expiry after submission as a reason to refuse. An IELTS expired after ITA and after AOR is a very different story from one that expired before you applied.

Real case: both tests expired after AOR, COPR arrived

In September 2016, a couple had their AOR from June 26. The principal applicant’s IELTS expired on September 6, and the spouse’s on July 18. Members said no new test was needed. In June 2017, they reported getting their COPR with no request to retake. Later posts in 2021 said the same thing: once you submit, your application is “locked.”

Some people still get bad advice here. In August 2018, an applicant who submitted on August 15 and got an AOR on August 29 was told by their representative to retake IELTS after it expired. Senior members quoted IRCC’s page and said no retake was needed. If anyone says your test must stay valid until COPR, ask them where IRCC says that.

Three myths members kept repeating, and what IRCC actually says.

Test Date or Result Date? When the 2-Year Clock Starts

IRCC’s page says results must be “less than 2 years old.” It doesn’t say if that counts from the day you sat the test or the day you got your results.

In August 2024, a CELPIP taker sat the test on August 20, 2022, but only got results on November 5, 2022. A senior member said the 2 years count from the test date. In another July 2024 thread, an applicant with an IELTS test on July 23, 2022 (results August 5) submitted their CEC application on July 23, 2024, exactly two years after the test. One reply said the clock runs from the result date. By November 2024, they had no retake request, but no decision either.

Our advice: count from the test date

Since IRCC doesn’t say which date counts, use the safer reading. Count 2 years from the day you took the test, and submit at least a few days before that. Don’t plan to submit on the last day.

IELTS Expired After ITA and You Retake the Test

Retaking is allowed, and IRCC’s officer instructions describe this exact situation. They list as a change in circumstances: “original scores expire and candidate retakes the test, with lower results.” What happens next depends on your new score.

Your new score is the same or higher

This is the easy case. In an April 2023 reply, a member said they retook before submitting, scored higher, and entered the new results. You apply with the scores you have on submission day.

Your new score is lower, but you stay above the cutoff

IRCC’s “respond to an invitation” page lists retested scores that “are lower” as a reason your CRS can drop. If your new score is still at or above the lowest score in the round you were invited in, you can go ahead.

Real case: 505 to 493, cutoff 477

In June 2023, an applicant’s IELTS expired a few days after the ITA. Members told them to retake, submit if they stayed at or above the round cutoff, and upload both certificates with a letter of explanation. In April 2026, another member posted in the same thread. Their CRS would fall from 505 to 493 with the new test, and the cutoff was 477. They were told it was fine, as long as program minimums were also met.

Both applicants stayed above the cutoff after a lower retake.

Your new score drops you below the cutoff

IRCC is direct: if your recalculated score falls below the minimum for your round, “you should decline the invitation.” The officer instructions say the same.

Your new score is below your program minimum

This is the trap most people miss when their IELTS expired after ITA. Staying above the cutoff is not enough. You must also meet your program’s minimum language level.

Real case: above cutoff, still refused

In March 2015, an applicant got an ITA at CRS 468, and their IELTS expired on April 6. A retake would put them at 457, and the cutoff was 453, so they were advised to submit the newest valid test and disclose both. Then in June 2016, another member posted in the same thread. They had retaken the test and scored 5.5 in listening and writing. The officer refused the FSW application because the score was below CLB 7, even though their CRS was still above the cutoff.

Switching Tests: IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF or TCF

You don’t have to retake the same test. IRCC accepts five tests, and any valid one works. If your IELTS expired after ITA, CELPIP or PTE Core may have earlier seats. Members confirmed switching is allowed.

Be careful with the version. IRCC only accepts IELTS General Training, not Academic. It says: “We don’t accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.” For PTE, only PTE Core counts, not PTE Academic. For CELPIP, only CELPIP-General.

Think about timing. You need results in hand before your 60 days end. In April 2019, one member booked a computer-delivered IELTS and said results would come in about 5 to 7 days. Check the provider’s current turnaround time before you book.

How to Update Your Profile or Application With New Scores

While you are still in the pool

IRCC says you “must update your profile” if you get a new language test. Updating keeps your original submission date, so you keep your rank in a tie-breaker. Use the “Update form” button in your account. An ineligible profile can’t be updated, so you’d need a new one.

After you get an ITA

Members said that after the ITA, you enter the new test details directly in your eAPR. IRCC’s officer instructions say that if your situation changes and you still submit, “the candidate must ensure that the change in circumstance is properly reflected in their APR.”

How members handled a retake after the ITA

  • Enter the new results in the language section of your eAPR, including the certificate number and PIN if asked.
  • Recalculate your CRS with the new scores and compare it to your round cutoff.
  • Upload both certificates: the old one your ITA was based on and the new one.
  • Add a letter of explanation saying the old test expired, when you retook it, and your new CRS.
  • Submit before your 60 days end and before the new test’s own expiry date.

Why you should never hide a lower score

IRCC’s officer instructions say applicants who can’t prove the information that got them invited “will be refused on section A11.2 and assessed for misrepresentation.” Showing both tests with a clear letter is the safest way to prove you acted honestly.

Your Spouse’s Test Expired: Does It Matter?

Your spouse’s language test only adds points. If you claimed those points, an expired or lower spouse test can change your CRS.

Real case: spouse retook and scored lower

In July 2025, an Ontario nominee had a base CRS of 414, which went to 1,014 with the nomination. They got an ITA on June 23, 2025. Their spouse’s IELTS had expired on June 18, and the spouse retook it and scored lower. With about two weeks left, they worried about misrepresentation. A reply in August 2025 said the spouse’s test isn’t an eligibility requirement, and advised submitting both results with a letter of explanation.

IRCC hasn’t published a clear rule on this exact case, so treat that reply as member advice. To be safe, recalculate your CRS without your spouse’s language points. If you’re still above the round cutoff, disclose everything and explain it. Also check our guide on a non-accompanying spouse in Express Entry if your spouse won’t come with you.

Provincial Nominees With an Expiring Test

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, so nominees rarely fall below a cutoff after a lower retake. In June 2020, a Saskatchewan nominee whose IELTS expired on July 12 retook it and scored lower. Members said the 600 points kept them far above the cutoff, but the program minimum still applied.

Timing is the bigger risk for nominees. In October 2018, a Manitoba nominee’s IELTS expired on November 3, and the next seat in their country was February 14, 2019. Members said to submit before November 3 or plan on a retake. In June 2020, test centres were closed in one nominee’s country, and members suggested creating a new profile once new results came in, then asking the province to move the nomination.

IELTS Expired After ITA: Submit, Retake or Decline?

If your IELTS expired after ITA, use this checklist before you do anything else. It covers every path we saw in the real cases.

Decision checklist for an IELTS expired after ITA: submit with new scores or decline the invitation
Answer all four questions before you submit your application.

IELTS expired after ITA: your 3 paths

  • Submit early: if your current test will still be valid on submission day, finish your documents and apply now.
  • Retake and submit: if it will expire first, retake fast. Submit only if your new CRS meets the round cutoff and your program minimum.
  • Decline: if you can’t get valid results in time, or the new score is too low, decline the ITA.

Declining sounds scary, but IRCC says it “won’t affect whether or not you’re invited to apply later.” If you just let the 60 days run out, your profile is removed and you must start over. So declining on purpose is the better move.

Common Mistakes When Your IELTS Expired After ITA

IELTS expired after ITA: mistakes real applicants made

  • Believing the score is “locked” at the ITA date.
  • Waiting for medicals or police certificates instead of submitting with proof they were requested.
  • Planning to submit on the exact day the test turns 2 years old.
  • Retaking IELTS Academic or PTE Academic, which IRCC doesn’t accept.
  • Checking only the CRS cutoff and forgetting the CLB program minimum.
  • Hiding the lower score instead of uploading both tests with an explanation.
  • Letting the ITA expire instead of declining it.
  • Retaking after AOR because someone said the test must stay valid until COPR.

Most of these came from bad advice, not bad luck. If your IELTS expired after ITA and people give you mixed answers, read IRCC’s own language test page. It’s short and settles most arguments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my IELTS expires after I receive an ITA but before I submit my eAPR?

You can’t submit with the expired test. Retake it and submit with the new results if you still qualify, or decline the ITA and go back into the pool.

Does my IELTS need to be valid until I get my COPR?

No. IRCC only requires it to be valid when you create your profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence.

My IELTS expired after I got my AOR. Do I need to retake it?

No. Members whose tests expired after submission reported approvals with no request to retake.

Is the 2-year validity counted from the test date or the result date?

IRCC doesn’t say. Members usually count from the test date, and that is the safer reading to follow.

Can I switch from IELTS to CELPIP or PTE Core after an ITA?

Yes. Any approved test works, as long as it is valid on submission day and your new scores still qualify you.

What if my new score is lower and my CRS drops?

You can still submit if your new CRS is at or above the cutoff of your round and you meet your program minimum. If not, IRCC says you should decline.

Will declining the ITA hurt my chances later?

No. IRCC says declining won’t affect whether you’re invited later. You go back into the pool.

My spouse’s IELTS expired. Does that affect our application?

It can lower your CRS if you claimed spouse language points. Recalculate without them and disclose both results with a letter of explanation.

What happens if my test expires while I’m in the pool?

Your profile can become ineligible. Take a new test and update your profile, which keeps your original submission date.

Should I upload both my old and new test results?

Yes. Members were advised to upload both certificates plus a letter of explanation so the officer can see why your score changed.

Retook your test? Check your new CRS first

Enter your new band scores and see if you are still above the cutoff of the round you were invited in.

Final Thoughts

If your IELTS expired after ITA, don’t panic, and don’t guess. Look at one date: the day you’ll submit. If your test is valid then, you’re fine. If it isn’t, retake quickly, check your new CRS and your program minimum, then submit or decline.

The applicants who ran into trouble either hid a lower score or trusted advice that didn’t match IRCC’s page. Be open, upload both results, and explain the change. That is what worked in these cases.
