Online Degree ECA Express Entry Guide: Will WES Accept Your Distance Degree? (Real Cases)
Which ECA bodies assess distance degrees, why some get rejected, and what the result does to your CRS score. Based on real applicant outcomes.

You finished your degree online, or by distance, while working full time. Now you want to use it for Canada. The big question is simple: will your online degree ECA Express Entry result count the same as a campus degree?
We read 17 threads on a large Canadian immigration forum, from 2015 to 2023, and checked every claim against IRCC and ECA body pages. The pattern is clear. Most online degrees pass. The ones that fail usually fail for a different reason than people think.
Below you will find the official online degree ECA Express Entry rules, real WES and IQAS outcomes, the CRS points at stake, and a checklist to use before you pay for any distance program.
Quick answer: does an online degree ECA count for Express Entry?
Yes, in most cases. IRCC does not treat online or distance degrees differently. For an online degree ECA Express Entry result, what matters is that a designated body (WES, IQAS, CES, ICAS or ICES) finds your credential equal to a completed Canadian credential. Rejections usually come from an unrecognized school, too few credits, or an IQAS exclusion, not from the online format.
Key takeaways
Online Degree ECA Express Entry Rules at a Glance
If you studied outside Canada, you need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to get education points. IRCC’s rule is short: “You don’t need an assessment for a Canadian degree, diploma or certificate.” Everyone else does.
The ECA report must show your completed foreign credential is “equal to a completed” Canadian secondary or post-secondary credential. It must also be less than 5 years old when you create your profile and when you submit your application. You can read the full rules on IRCC’s education assessment page.
Rule | What it means for an online degree |
|---|---|
Who needs an ECA | Anyone claiming points for education completed outside Canada |
Who can issue it | WES, IQAS, CES, ICAS or ICES (5 designated bodies) |
How long it is valid | Less than 5 years old at profile and at application |
What IRCC reads | The Canadian equivalency on the report |
Does “online” matter to IRCC? | No. The ECA page and CRS grid do not mention delivery mode |
What decides the result | Recognized school, program level and credit volume |
Canadian online degree | No ECA needed; base points yes, bonus points no |

So IRCC does not ask how you studied. Your online degree ECA Express Entry outcome is decided by the ECA body and your school’s status.
Which ECA Bodies Assess Distance Degrees?
IRCC designates five bodies: WES, IQAS, CES (University of Toronto), ICAS and ICES (BCIT). None of them, as far as we could find, publishes a general “we reject online degrees” rule. But they don’t all treat an online degree ECA Express Entry file the same way.
WES
Most of our cases are WES cases. We found no public WES page on distance education. Its FAQ says it does not evaluate professional, vocational or trade certificates. Members reported that WES assessed distance degrees normally when the school and program were recognized.
IQAS
IQAS, run by the Alberta government, is stricter for some Indian schools. Its required documents list says: “Distance education credentials from SMU will not be assessed because they cannot be verified conclusively.” That rule did not always exist. In 2018, IQAS still assessed some SMU distance MBAs, as you will see in the cases below.
CES, ICAS and ICES
We found no official distance-education policy for these three. In August 2020, one member unhappy with a WES result said they were moving to CES for a two-year MBA. They never posted the outcome.
What Decides the Result: Recognition, Not Delivery Mode
Across all 17 threads, the online format was almost never the reason for a bad online degree ECA Express Entry result. Two things mattered more: whether the school is recognized for that program, and how many credits it carries.

Indian distance degrees: recognition first
In March 2018, a member said WES evaluates distance courses as long as they are government approved. In a 2020 thread, an experienced member said to check the UGC list first. For India, the university must be recognized and its distance mode approved (UGC and its Distance Education Bureau, DEB).
That is why two people from similar programs got opposite results. Approval for that program, in that year, is what gets checked.
UK online degrees: count the credits
UK programs are measured in credits, and the credit volume drove every UK outcome we saw. Members reported these results:
UK credential (studied online) | Reported ECA equivalency | CRS effect |
|---|---|---|
60-credit postgraduate certificate | One semester (college level) | Adds no Express Entry points |
BTEC Level 5 Professional Diploma | College certificate, one semester | Adds no points on its own |
OTHM Level 7 Diploma (100% online) | One-year postgraduate diploma | Counts as a one-year credential |
Higher National Diploma (HND) | Two-year diploma | Two-year credential |
UK BA or BSc (distance) | Bachelor’s degree (four years) | Bachelor’s points |
180-credit MSc (distance) | Master’s degree | Master’s points |
Reported outcomes from forum members, 2018 to 2022. Not an official WES table.
Members’ rule of thumb: 60 UK credits is about one semester, 120 is about one year, and 180 can be a master’s. Planning a UK course for points? Aim for 120 credits or more.
Real Online Degree ECA Express Entry Cases (2015 to 2022)
These are real online degree ECA Express Entry outcomes that members posted, with dates and numbers as reported. School approvals change over time, so an old result is a clue, not a promise.
Online degree ECA Express Entry cases WES accepted
Real case: IGNOU distance MCA accepted (March 2015)
In March 2015, a member reported that WES recognized their IGNOU distance MCA and issued the ECA, after someone claimed WES ignores distance courses. In April 2015, another member said WES accepted their part-time MBA. They got 135 points for education as a single master’s holder and received an ITA.
Real case: a 6-month online MSc assessed as a master’s (December 2018)
In December 2018, a member finished a 180-credit University of London MSc by distance in about six months, on an accelerated track. The transcript said “Distance Learning – Web Based.” WES still evaluated it as a master’s. The diploma supplement showed one year full time and 180 credits, and that is what counted.
More WES successes followed. In June 2018, a reply confirmed WES accepts Bharati Vidyapeeth’s School of Distance Education. In October 2018, a Guru Jambheshwar University distance graduate got their WES report. In August 2022, a Sri Lankan applicant with a Goldsmiths, University of London BSc studied through a local institute got a four-year bachelor’s equivalency. Their CRS was 444, held back mostly by age.
Real case: UK credentials studied remotely from Syria (2018)
In mid-2018, a member who studied UK programs remotely from Syria posted three WES results. The BTEC Level 5 diploma became a one-semester college certificate, the HND a two-year diploma, and the BA a four-year bachelor’s. They were told to claim “two or more credentials, one of three years or more.”
In February 2019, a Jordanian member with a campus BA enrolled in an Arab Open University MBA to raise points. The MBA was recognized, they got a Saskatchewan nomination, and by December 2020 had a PR acknowledgement of receipt.
Distance degrees that were rejected or downgraded
Real case: IQAS refused SMU distance degrees (December 2018)
In 2018, one applicant’s SMU distance MBA went through IQAS: documents delivered June 20, ECA soft copy on September 22. But in December 2018, another member’s SMU distance BCA and MA were refused. IQAS cited a policy against Indian distance credentials done at study centres outside the university’s home state. Today IQAS won’t assess SMU distance credentials at all.
Other negative or mixed results members reported
Year | Program (distance or online) | Body | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
2015 | IGNOU MCA (India) | WES | Accepted |
2015 | Part-time MBA | WES | Master’s, 135 points, ITA |
2018 | SMU distance MBA (India) | IQAS | ECA issued |
2018 | SMU BCA and MA (India) | IQAS | Refused |
2018 | University of London MSc, 180 credits | WES | Master’s |
2019 | Madurai Kamaraj DDE PG Diploma | WES | One-year credential |
2020 | OTHM Level 7 Diploma (UK) | WES | One-year PG diploma |
2020 | MITSDE PG diploma (India) | WES | Not comparable |
2022 | Goldsmiths, University of London BSc | WES | Four-year bachelor’s |

Distance MBA: Master’s or Postgraduate Diploma?
This is the most common online degree ECA Express Entry disappointment. People expect master’s points from a distance MBA. Often it comes back as a one-year postgraduate diploma.
In April 2019, a Madurai Kamaraj University distance PG Diploma in Management got a one-year equivalency from WES. In 2020, an experienced member said a Panjab University distance MBA would likely be a PG diploma at WES, not a master’s. In August 2020, a MITSDE member said WES gave only a bachelor’s-level result for their profile.
The OTHM case adds a warning about time. It was sold as a six-month online program, but the member said it took about 10 months to finish. It was then evaluated as a one-year postgraduate diploma.
Tip: a PG diploma result is not always a big loss
If you already have a bachelor’s of three years or more, a one-year PG diploma gives you “two or more credentials.” For a single applicant that is 128 points, only 7 less than a master’s. With CLB 9, the skill transferability points are the same 50 in both cases. Run both versions in our CRS calculator before you pay for a second assessment.
How Your ECA Result Changes Your CRS Score
Your ECA equivalency goes straight into the CRS education section. Here are the core points from the IRCC CRS grid.

ECA equivalency | With spouse | Without spouse |
|---|---|---|
Secondary diploma | 28 | 30 |
One-year post-secondary | 84 | 90 |
Two-year post-secondary | 91 | 98 |
Bachelor’s or 3+ year program | 112 | 120 |
Two or more credentials, one 3+ years | 119 | 128 |
Master’s or professional degree | 126 | 135 |
PhD | 140 | 150 |
Source: IRCC Comprehensive Ranking System grid, updated June 2026.
The gap between a one-year result and a master’s is 45 points single and 42 with a spouse. But most people with a distance master’s already hold a bachelor’s, so the real online degree ECA Express Entry gap is often much smaller.
Worked example: adding a distance program to a bachelor’s
Take a single applicant with a four-year bachelor’s, CLB 9 in all four abilities, and no Canadian work. We count core education plus education-and-language transferability.
Education on ECA | Core education | Education + language | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
Bachelor’s only | 120 | 25 | 145 |
Bachelor’s + one-year distance PG diploma | 128 | 50 | 178 (+33) |
Bachelor’s + distance master’s | 135 | 50 | 185 (+40) |
IRCC grid: a master’s, or two credentials with one of 3+ years, both earn 50 with CLB 9+.
So a one-year online PG diploma can add 33 points on top of a bachelor’s. If WES downgrades your distance MBA to a PG diploma, you lose 7 points, not 45. With CLB 7 or 8 instead of CLB 9, the transferability part is 13 or 25 instead of 25 or 50. For the full maths, see our guide to two or more credentials.
Your spouse’s online degree
An accompanying spouse’s education adds up to 10 points: 2 for secondary, 6 for one year, 8 for a bachelor’s, 10 for a master’s. A spouse going from secondary to a one-year online diploma gains 4 points. Small, but it can help in a close draw.
Canadian Online Programs: Education Points Yes, Bonus Points No
Some people take an online program from a Canadian school, like Athabasca, from abroad. You don’t need an ECA for a Canadian credential. The question is which points it earns.
IRCC’s CRS tool page is direct: “Distance learning counts for education points, but not for bonus points in your profile or application.” So a Canadian online bachelor’s gets you bachelor’s education points, but not the extra 15 points (1 to 2 year credential) or 30 points (3+ years) for Canadian study.

For the bonus, IRCC requires at least eight months of full-time study and eight months physically in Canada, at a school within Canada (foreign campuses don’t count). Language study can’t be more than half the program, and you can’t have been on an award requiring you to return home.
Real case: “Half the program must be in Canada?” (February 2021)
In February 2021, a member taking a Canadian online degree from abroad quoted the CRS tool: base points yes, bonus no. A reply claimed you need no more than 50% online study. That is not IRCC’s test, which is eight months full time and eight months physically in Canada. For more, read our Canadian education points guide.
The COVID exception (March 2020 to August 2022)
IRCC made a temporary rule in July 2022. If you completed any part of your Canadian program between March 1, 2020 and August 31, 2022, it can count for Canadian education points even if you studied by distance, from outside Canada, or part time. If your program ran during that window, you may still qualify for the bonus.
Studying While Working: Which Hours Count?
Online degrees let you keep your job. Working abroad while studying abroad is usually fine. The problem is mostly Canadian work while you are a full-time student in Canada.
IRCC’s Help Centre (question 394) says student work “in Canada or abroad” can count for FSW minimums if paid and continuous. It does not count for CEC or FSTP minimums. For CRS, Canadian work as a full-time student does not count, but work outside Canada while studying does.
Your situation | FSW minimum | CEC minimum | CRS points |
|---|---|---|---|
Full-time job abroad + online degree abroad | Yes (paid, continuous) | Not Canadian work | Yes, as foreign work |
Job in Canada while a full-time student in Canada | Student work may count | No | No |
Co-op work terms in Canada | Not clearly stated | No | No |
Job in Canada while studying part time | Depends on your status | Depends on how the school classed you | Depends |
Source: IRCC Help Centre Q394 and the CEC and FSW pages, updated September 2026.
So if you did an online master’s abroad while working full time abroad, you can generally claim both the degree (through your ECA) and the foreign work years. See our foreign work experience guide. For Canadian hours, check the CEC rules.
Real case: TA and RA work that did not count (February 2016)
In February 2016, a PhD student in Canada had about two years of part-time research and teaching assistant work. As a full-time student, that work did not count, and the member said it cost them 25 points. In December 2023, a student working full time during a part-time final semester was told those hours don’t count either.
Check Before You Enrol: A 6-Point List
Many people start an online program just to raise their CRS score. That can work. But in the rejected cases above, people found out after they paid.

Online degree ECA Express Entry checklist before you enrol
If you can say yes to all six, your online degree ECA Express Entry plan is usually safe. Then try the WES degree equivalency tool as a first check.
Common Online Degree ECA Express Entry Mistakes

The profile point matters. In 2018, the member with three UK credentials was told to fill in the profile using the ECA summary, not the certificate names. For each CRS factor, see how to calculate your CRS score.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WES accept online or distance degrees for Express Entry?
Yes, when the school and program are recognized. Members reported WES accepting distance degrees from IGNOU, Bharati Vidyapeeth and the University of London.
Is an online degree ECA Express Entry result scored differently from a campus degree?
No. IRCC reads the equivalency on your ECA report. The ECA page and CRS grid do not mention delivery mode.
Will my ECA report say “distance” and does it matter?
We found no official WES statement on this. IRCC scores only the equivalency.
Is a distance MBA assessed as a master’s?
Sometimes, but many members got a one-year postgraduate diploma instead. It depends on the school and the program.
Does IQAS assess Sikkim Manipal University distance degrees?
No. IQAS says SMU distance credentials will not be assessed because they cannot be verified conclusively.
Can a one-year online PG diploma give me “two or more credentials” points?
Yes, if it is assessed as one year and you also hold a 3+ year credential. That is 128 points for a single applicant.
Will a UK online course of 60 credits add CRS points?
Members reported 60 UK credits as one semester, which adds no points. Aim for at least 120 credits.
Do Canadian online degrees count for CRS points?
Yes, for education points, with no ECA needed. They don’t earn the 15 or 30 bonus points unless part of the study fell between March 2020 and August 2022.
Can I claim both my online master’s and the job I had while studying?
Generally yes, if the work was outside Canada. Foreign work while studying counts for CRS, and paid continuous student work can count for FSW.
Does work while studying full time in Canada count?
No. It does not count for CEC or for CRS points, and co-op work terms are also excluded for CEC.

Final Thoughts
An online degree ECA Express Entry result is usually decided by one thing: whether the school and program are recognized. The online format rarely matters. Members who lost points mostly trusted a private provider, a short UK certificate or a closed IQAS route.
Check the six points before you enrol, and run your score both ways. In our worked example, a one-year distance diploma added 33 points to a bachelor’s holder’s score.
