Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR): expiry date, errors and e-COPR

The Confirmation of Permanent Residence is the document that turns an approved application into an actual status. Everyone calls it the COPR. If you are outside Canada it arrives with your passport, and you hand it to a border officer when you land. If you are in Canada it appears as a download in an online portal.

It looks like a form, and people treat it like a receipt. It is closer to a ticket with an expiry date printed on it. IRCC says it cannot extend that date. The details on it have to match your passport. And after you land, it stays useful for years in ways new permanent residents often do not expect.

We read IRCC’s page on the COPR, its three Express Entry approval pages and the guide for correcting errors, along with five public forum threads from 2017 to 2024 about expiry dates, typos and what happened when someone could not travel in time.

Quick answer: what is a Confirmation of Permanent Residence?

IRCC’s page (modified April 9, 2026) says a COPR proves you have been approved for permanent residence and is used to complete the final steps to become a permanent resident. If you are outside Canada, you must travel and present it at a port of entry before the validity date on it. IRCC’s Express Entry page adds that it cannot extend your COPR. If you are in Canada, an electronic version, the e-COPR, is uploaded to your portal account. Check every detail against your passport the day you receive it.

Key takeaways

  • A COPR proves approval and is used to complete the last steps to becoming a permanent resident.
  • From outside Canada, you must present it at a port of entry before the validity date printed on it.
  • IRCC says it cannot extend a COPR.
  • If there is an error, IRCC has a correction process. Fix it before you travel if you can.
  • Keep it after you get your PR card. IRCC says you may need it to update your card or support other applications.

What the Confirmation of Permanent Residence is

IRCC’s page “Confirmation of Permanent Residence document” puts it in one sentence: a COPR proves that you have been approved for permanent residence. It goes on to say the document is used to complete the final steps to become a permanent resident in Canada, and lists what it shows.

What a COPR shows, according to IRCC

  • Your personal information.
  • Your immigration category.
  • Your destination details.
  • Any conditions of stay.
  • The validity dates.
  • The date your permanent resident status began, once it has been confirmed.

IRCC’s Express Entry approval page (modified June 22, 2026) adds that the COPR carries your identifying details and photograph, and that you should check them against your passport. People from countries that need a visa also get a permanent resident visa in the passport. We describe how those arrive in passport request.

The date on your COPR, and why it cannot move

Two official sentences set the rule. The COPR page says that if you are outside Canada, you must travel to Canada and present your COPR at a port of entry before the validity date indicated on it. The Express Entry page says: we cannot extend your COPR, so you should make sure to travel to Canada before it expires.

At the border, IRCC’s page for arrivals says the officer will make sure you are entering on or before the expiry date shown on the COPR, check that you are the person who was approved, and ask a few questions to confirm you are still eligible.

Our summary of IRCC’s COPR page (modified April 9, 2026) and Express Entry approval pages (modified June 22, 2026), with applicant reports from the threads discussed below.

Real case: “how long is a COPR valid?” (July 2018)

A Federal Skilled Worker applicant had received a passport request but their medical had expired the month before. They asked how long a COPR is normally valid and whether they would need a new medical. Members said the usual pattern is one year from the medical exam, and that the date on the COPR is the date by which you must land. They expected IRCC either to ask for a new medical or to extend the existing one, and advised waiting for instructions. No outcome was reported.

Real case: COPR valid for a year, medical expiring in two months (June 2018)

An applicant’s COPR showed a validity date in May 2019, but their medical exam results were due to expire in August 2018. They asked which date counted. A member answered firmly that they had to land before the medical expired. Nobody posted a source for that, and no outcome was reported.

That second case shows how forum certainty can outrun the official text. IRCC’s page names one deadline, the validity date on the COPR. We found nothing on the pages we read that sets an earlier one. If the two dates on your documents do not line up, ask the office that issued the COPR before you plan around either. Our medical exam guide explains the twelve-month validity of results.

If you cannot travel before it expires

The official answer is that the COPR is not extended. What happens next is not described on the pages we read, and in practice it has depended on the case.

Real case: could not land in time, became a permanent resident months later (June 2022)

This was a spousal sponsorship, not Express Entry. The applicant could not travel before the deadline because of family circumstances. The medical expired in March 2022 and the COPR with it. The visa office replied that it would request an extension of the medical result, which would in turn extend the validity of the COPR. A member who had been through something similar advised emailing the issuing office directly, explaining the reason with documents, and expecting either a medical extension or a new exam. The poster later reported becoming a permanent resident after about six months and a new medical.

One family-class case is not a rule, and it sits awkwardly beside IRCC’s statement that it cannot extend a COPR. Take two things from it. First, the issuing office is the place to write, with reasons and proof. Second, the fix took half a year. Plan your landing so you never need it.

Errors on a COPR

IRCC’s COPR page says that if there is an error on your COPR, you can find out how to have it corrected, and links to the amendment process. That process is set out in a guide for requesting changes to a COPR or other immigration documents. It covers details such as family name, given names and date of birth, asks for copies of documents that prove the correct information, and states that information which changed after you became a permanent resident will not be amended. We go through it in name mismatch in Express Entry.

Real case: two digits swapped in the passport number (September 2017)

An applicant noticed that the passport number on the COPR and on the visa had two digits reversed. Members told them to contact the visa office that issued it, as the covering letter instructed, and to state the discrepancy plainly without assigning blame. They also corrected a common belief: you must land before the date on your own COPR, not within some fixed number of days. Six days later the applicant had written to the visa office and was still waiting for an answer.

Real case: an old name on a child’s COPR, reissued before travel (April to June 2024)

A parent found that a dependent child’s COPR carried a name that was no longer on the child’s passport, even though they had told IRCC about the change during processing. Some replies suggested asking the border officer to fix it on arrival or filing an amendment later. The parent chose to contact the office that issued the COPR instead. Within two months that office cancelled the original and issued a corrected one, with a new visa following within 15 days. Later posters in the thread, who had filed amendment requests after landing, described waits of around six months.

The pattern in both cases is the same: an error is far easier to fix before landing, through the office that issued the document, than after. Check the COPR the day it arrives.

The day your COPR arrives

  • Compare every line with your passport: names, date of birth, passport number, sex, country.
  • Check each family member’s COPR the same way.
  • Note the validity date and put it in your calendar.
  • If something is wrong, write to the issuing office at once, attaching the passport page.
  • Do not sign or alter it except where instructed.
  • Make copies, paper and digital.

The e-COPR for applicants in Canada

If you are approved while in Canada, there is usually no paper COPR and no border interview. IRCC’s COPR page says it uploads an electronic Confirmation of Permanent Residence, the e-COPR, to your portal account. Its Express Entry page says status is confirmed through a secure online portal and that a printed and signed e-COPR can be used to prove you are a permanent resident in Canada while you wait for your PR card. A later post in this series covers the portal step by step.

The same page says you must tell IRCC if you leave Canada before it grants you permanent resident status. Use the IRCC web form for that.

What to do with it after you land

IRCC’s advice is short: keep your COPR in a safe place even after receiving your PR card, as you might need it to update information on your card or to support other applications. In everyday terms, it is your proof of the date you became a permanent resident, which matters later for things like counting your days in Canada. Our physical presence calculator uses that date.

For people landing from abroad, IRCC’s arrivals page lists what to carry with the COPR: your valid passport, your permanent resident visa if you have one, and proof of funds to support yourself and your family. See our proof of funds guide. The officer also confirms the Canadian address where your PR card will be mailed.

Six mistakes people make with their COPR

Six mistakes from the rules and the threads

  • Not checking it on arrival. Typos are fixable before travel and slow to fix after.
  • Planning to ask for more time. IRCC says it cannot extend a COPR.
  • Relying on a forum rule about the date. The date printed on your own COPR is the one that counts.
  • Travelling with a known error and hoping the border officer will sort it out.
  • Leaving Canada before status is confirmed, if you are being landed through the portal, without telling IRCC.
  • Throwing it away once the PR card comes. IRCC says to keep it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Confirmation of Permanent Residence?

IRCC says a COPR proves you have been approved for permanent residence and is used to complete the final steps to become a permanent resident in Canada. It shows your personal information, immigration category, validity dates and, once confirmed, when your status began.

How long is a COPR valid?

It is valid until the date printed on it. IRCC’s pages do not explain how the date is set. Applicants report it is usually one year from the medical exam, or the passport’s expiry date if that is earlier.

Can I extend my COPR?

IRCC’s Express Entry page says it cannot extend your COPR and that you should travel to Canada before it expires. If you truly cannot travel, write to the office that issued it and explain why, with documents.

What if there is a mistake on my COPR?

IRCC has a process to correct errors. In forum cases, contacting the issuing office before travelling led to a corrected COPR within about two months, while amendment requests made after landing took around six months.

What is an e-COPR?

It is the electronic version. IRCC says that for people approved while in Canada, it uploads an e-COPR to their portal account, and that a printed and signed copy can be used as proof of status while waiting for the PR card.

Do I need to keep my COPR after I get my PR card?

Yes. IRCC says to keep it in a safe place because you might need it to update information on your PR card or to support other applications.

Final Thoughts

Your Confirmation of Permanent Residence does three jobs: it proves you were approved, it sets the date by which you must land, and afterwards it records the day your status began. Check it the day it arrives, respect the date on it, and keep it long after the PR card shows up.

If you cannot travel before the validity date, if the COPR has an error and your flight is close, or if your family situation has changed since approval, speak to a licensed consultant or lawyer and contact the issuing office without delay. These are fixable problems when raised early and hard ones when raised at the airport.
