Additional Document Request in Express Entry: Deadlines, Extensions and How to Respond (Real Cases)
IRCC has asked for one more document, and the clock in your account is running. Here is what the official pages say about replying and asking for more time, and what happened to applicants who went through it.

An additional document request is the message that lands in your account weeks or months after you submit your Express Entry application for permanent residence. An officer has opened the file and wants something more. Applicants call it an ADR. It names a document and gives you a date to send it by.
It is easy to read it as bad news. In the threads we went through, it was more often a sign that someone was working on the file. What matters is how you answer: the right document, sent the way the letter asks, before the date in your account.
We read six IRCC pages about requested documents, all modified in August or September 2026, and public forum threads from 2015 to 2025 in which applicants described the request they received and what happened next. Below, we keep the two apart: what is official, and what is applicant experience.
Quick answer: what do you do when IRCC asks for more documents?
Open the request letter in your account, note the “Required by” date and send exactly what it asks for, the way it asks. IRCC says that if you do not follow its instructions your application may be delayed, and that an application missing a requested document could be delayed, returned or refused. If you cannot get the document in time, upload a letter of explanation with proof that you tried, in the same slot, before the deadline. If there is no upload slot, IRCC tells you to use its web form.
Key takeaways
What an additional document request is, and what IRCC calls it
You will not find the letters ADR on the IRCC pages we read. That short form belongs to applicants. IRCC’s own page is titled “Submit new documents or information we requested” (modified September 3, 2026), and it describes the same thing.
The Express Entry page “After you apply” (modified August 4, 2026) says IRCC will contact you through your IRCC secure account to ask for more documents if needed, and to set up an interview if needed. So an additional document request is a normal part of processing, not a refusal.
A Help Centre answer about Express Entry (modified September 1, 2026) adds that once you submit, you cannot send more documents through your account unless IRCC asks for them. The request is what opens the door.
Question | What IRCC pages say | What applicants report |
|---|---|---|
How long do I get? | The request states the time; the account shows a “Required by” date | 7 days, 30 days and about two months in the threads we read |
Can I get more time? | You may ask; explain why and include proof you tried | Two reported another 30 or 60 days |
No upload slot? | Tell IRCC through the web form, with screenshots | One applicant got a new request letter and a working slot within two weeks |
What if I send nothing? | Application may be delayed; a missing document can mean delay, return or refusal | Nobody in the threads we read tested this |

How the request arrives and where the deadline is
IRCC’s page on requested documents (modified September 3, 2026) says it will tell you what it needs, how to submit, and how much time you have. The Help Centre answer for Express Entry is one line: if IRCC asks for a document, you get a message in your account.
The deadline lives in two places: the request letter and the upload screen. There, each requested item has a document name, instructions and a field called “Required by”, which the Help Centre defines as the latest date by which IRCC needs to receive the document.

We looked for a standard deadline on the official pages and did not find one. The only fixed number on the “After you apply” page is for biometrics: 30 days from the date on the biometrics letter, which we cover in our biometrics guide. For every other request, the letter sets its own date.
Real case: a 7-day letter, more than three months in (December 2015)
An applicant inside Canada received an acknowledgment of receipt in early August. In late November a request letter arrived giving 7 days and saying the documents were needed to make a final decision. They replied within days, and a month later were still waiting. Members answered that a request does not automatically mean a delay. One had received four requests and still finished in under three months. No final outcome was reported in the thread.
What applicants are asked for most often
IRCC does not publish a list of the documents it most often requests, so this section is applicant experience only.
What was requested | When | Deadline mentioned |
|---|---|---|
Police certificate | March 2018, May 2022 | About two months in the 2018 thread |
Updated proof of funds with six months of transactions | April 2025 | Not stated |
Schedule A, proof of funds and a letter of explanation | April 2022 | Not stated |
Educational credential assessment report | May 2017 | 7 days |
Documents and fees to add a new spouse | December 2021 | Not stated |
Our summary of public forum threads. It shows what a handful of applicants reported, not how often IRCC asks for each document.
Each has its own rules, which we do not repeat here. For a police certificate, start with our police certificate guide. For proof of funds, see our proof of funds guide. If the request is about Schedule A, gaps or addresses, read personal history for Express Entry. A medical is covered in the medical exam guide, and questions about job duties come back to the reference letter.
One request is not about a document at all. The “After you apply” page says IRCC cannot approve an application until all fees are paid, including the right of permanent residence fee.
Real case: asked for six months of bank history (May 2025)
An applicant in the Federal Skilled Worker Program, selected in a French-language round, got an acknowledgment of receipt in January 2025 and a medical request in February. At the end of April a new request asked for updated proof of funds showing six months of transactions, plus details about the job of the person who had gifted money. They uploaded it, and from May 1 the account said the documents were being reviewed. A long-time member called that timeline normal. By late September 2025 no decision had been reported.
Unclear wording? You can ask
In a May 2022 thread, a request named one country for a police certificate but also repeated the general six-month rule. Members disagreed on what it meant, and the applicant decided to ask IRCC. The official page allows that: send your question through the web form, or upload a letter with the question in the document slot.
How to respond to an additional document request: 7 steps
The upload path is official. The order is our advice.
Our suggested order

The official upload path
The Help Centre answer “You asked me for a new document. How do I submit it?” (modified September 1, 2026) lists the clicks for the IRCC secure account, shown above. One detail is easy to miss. After you upload, the Details column reads “Uploaded – not submitted to IRCC”. The file is attached but has not been sent until you sign and click Transmit. IRCC says you then receive an email confirming that you added a new document.
The same answer opens with a caution: send your documents the way IRCC asks, or you could experience delays. Anything not in English or French still needs a translation, as explained in our certified translation guide.
If you cannot get the document before the deadline
The requested-documents page (modified September 3, 2026) has a section titled “Ask for more time to submit a document (request an extension)”. It says that in some cases you may need more time, that you must explain why you cannot get the document on time, and that you should include proof that you tried to get it.
You can ask in three ways: upload your explanation in your account, follow the contact instructions in the request letter, or use the web form. IRCC reviews the request. Nothing on the page promises an extension, and it tells you to send the document as soon as you have it.
A Help Centre answer (modified September 1, 2026) says the same for any document you do not have: write a letter explaining why, include supporting documents such as a receipt, and upload it in place of the missing document. An officer then decides whether the application is complete without it.

Real case: 30 days given, eight weeks needed (August 2018)
An applicant had a 30-day deadline for a document that another organization needed at least eight weeks to issue. A member who had been through the same thing with a police certificate described what they did: by the last day they uploaded, in the requested slot, proof that they had applied for the certificate and a letter of explanation, and were given another 60 days. They suggested combining both in one PDF. In May 2022 a later poster reported doing the same five days before the deadline and receiving a 30-day extension within about five hours.
Not every thread was hopeful. In May 2017 an applicant was given 7 days to provide an educational credential assessment report they had never obtained, and members doubted more time would be given. No final outcome was reported. Our Express Entry document checklist helps you catch that kind of gap before you submit.
When the account has no upload slot
Sometimes the request letter arrives and the account shows nowhere to put the file. A Help Centre answer (modified September 1, 2026) covers this: if you do not see the option to upload documents, tell IRCC through the web form. The requested-documents page calls the web form the route for when you cannot submit any other way.
Real case: request letter received, nowhere to upload (December 2021)
An applicant who married after submitting asked IRCC to add the spouse. IRCC replied with a request for documents and fees, but the account showed no upload option. Members advised using the web form before the deadline. In January 2022 the applicant wrote that, after reporting the problem that way, an updated request letter had arrived within about two weeks and the upload option had appeared. They later reported a passport request.
What to put in the web form when the slot is missing
What happens if you do not respond
Here the official wording is short. The requested-documents page (modified September 3, 2026) says you must follow the instructions IRCC gives you, or your application may be delayed. The Help Centre answer on missing documents (modified September 1, 2026) goes further: if there is a document IRCC asked you to give that you do not have, your application could be delayed, returned to you or refused.
We could not find an IRCC page that says what happens the day after the “Required by” date passes with nothing uploaded. IRCC does not publish a rule for that moment.
Ways an additional document request goes wrong
After you respond: what the wait looks like
IRCC gives no timeline for reviewing a response, so this part is applicant experience again. In an April 2018 thread, a provincial nominee was asked for a police certificate with a two-month deadline and uploaded it within eight days. About ten weeks later the status in the account had not changed. No final outcome was reported.
In the May 2022 police certificate thread, the applicant came back in September to say a passport request had arrived in August, after they had gone to court over the delay. Answering quickly protects you from the deadline. It does not buy a faster decision.
While you wait, tell IRCC about real changes through the web form, as the “After you apply” page asks. An updated travel history goes the same way. If you are reading this before you apply, you can calculate your CRS score and compare it with the latest draw cut-offs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an additional document request in Express Entry?
It is a message from IRCC, sent after you submit your application for permanent residence, asking for a new document or more information. Applicants shorten it to ADR. IRCC says it tells you what it needs, how to submit and how much time you have.
How many days do I have to respond to an ADR?
Your account shows the deadline as the “Required by” date beside the document. We could not find a standard number of days on any IRCC page. Applicants in the threads we read reported 7 days, 30 days and about two months.
Can I ask IRCC for an extension?
Yes. IRCC says you must explain why you cannot get the document on time and should include proof that you tried. Upload the explanation in your account, follow the request letter or use the web form. More time is not promised.
IRCC asked for a document but there is no upload option in my account. What now?
The Help Centre says to tell IRCC through the web form and to include the documents, a description of the problem and screenshots. Send one form only.
Does an ADR mean my application will be refused or delayed?
Not by itself. It means an officer needs something to continue. The risk comes from not answering: IRCC says that if you do not have a document it asked for, your application could be delayed, returned or refused.
Can I upload other documents while the request is open?
Not through the account. The Help Centre says you cannot send more documents there unless IRCC asks for them, and tells you to use the web form for anything else.

Document requests come after an invitation. If you are still in the pool, check your points and see how they compare with recent rounds.
Final Thoughts
An additional document request feels like a verdict, but in the files we read about it was a question. The applicants who came through it read the request letter closely, sent the named document in one clean PDF before the deadline, and uploaded an explanation and proof when the document could not be ready.
Some requests are not routine. If the letter questions whether your work experience or funds are real, mentions misrepresentation, or asks for something you cannot obtain at all, speak to a licensed consultant or lawyer before you reply.
